It was now group three’s turn. I watched the group members disappear through the front door. When their time ended, they came out with puzzled looks on their faces. I asked what had happened, and they said they had recorded a strange sound on their digital recorder. As they played it back, it could only be described as a low growling sound.
I was a member of group four, and we were eager to have our turn. As we entered the darkened stockroom, I realized I had left my flashlight outside. I saw that my fellow group members had them, so I didn’t think it would be a problem. As I walked toward the darkest area of the room, I called out for any paranormal beings to come forward. I assured our unseen spirits that we were there out of curiosity and meant them no harm, and I was not afraid to be spoken to or touched. Suddenly, I felt something brushing against my ankle. At first, it was a light touch, but then it became a little more persistent. I was stunned, and immediately assuming it was a large spider or rodent, I screamed for someone to bring the flashlight. Three flashlights illuminated my ankles as we checked for something, anything, to explain what happened. There was nothing there.
The next day, I went into Willoughby Coal, and Dan was standing by the front counter. He casually asked if anything interesting had happened at our paranormal investigation. When I gave him the particulars of this astonishing story, imagine my shock when he told me his story in response. For many years, the Garry family had a beloved dog named Yukon. Yukon loved to come into work every day with Dan and was well acquainted with life at Willoughby Coal. He had full run of the facility; they even left the front door cracked open so he could go out on the property as he pleased. He was getting up in years and had slowed down considerably. Yukon was content to lay curled up on his rug in front of the wood-burning stove near the front door, resting his afternoons away. One winter day, when it was time to go home, the dog was nowhere to be found. After searching everywhere inside, an all-out search was conducted on the property of Willoughby Coal. Tragically, Yukon’s body was discovered near the railroad tracks. He had been hit by a train.
My heart ached for Dan as he continued. Yukon, he described, was a big, shaggy old guy, dark brown, pretty smelly, with failing eyesight. He was about fourteen years old at the time of his death. During his senior years, he used to come up to the customers inside the store, give a little growl, sniff them around their ankles and go lay down again. To say I was stunned would be putting it mildly! He laughed and said that their administrative assistant, Michelle, would love this turn of events.
